Psychology of Gambling
How do people get addicted to gambling?
Gambling has been such a compelling part of our human nature and is very highly addictive, in fact, it's so addictive that it's a similar addiction to drugs and alcohol. However, the reason for people getting addicted to gambling is because some people are born with less chemical norepinephrine. This chemical imbalance that online occurs when people have a high level of stress and excitement, so when someone is gambling they would feel this excitement if they were to win money. Another factor for people to get addicted quickly is if they were to have a big win early, this can give you that adrenaline feeling which would then attract someone to then put more money on as they think it's easy to win money.

With gambling now evolving more to the online aspects more players are using it from playing in a comfortable environment which is their homes, which reduces the feeling of risk booting, daring and exploratory behaviour. Another reason why people like to use online gambling is because of it helping them escape from their daily stresses. Also, in more recent years it has become so easy for anyone to get onto a gambling app as everyone has a mobile phone they could easily whip out and place a quick and easy bet with a click of a button. In the last couple of months, BeGambleAware released an advert which can be linked to the psychology of gambling as they say when people lose on bets they're likely to place a bet straight after to make up for it. This is when they brought out 'Safe Gambling Campaign: Bet Regret - Chasing Losses 30"'.
Symtoms of gambling addiction:
- Finding it hard to stop or manage gambling.
- Always thinkning about gambling.
- lying about your gambling or hidhing it from other people.
- Chasing losses or gambling to get out of finacial trouble.
- Gambling until all of your money is gone.
- Feeling anxious, worried, depressed or irritable.
A lot of people find it difficult to know if someone has a problem with gambling because many gamblers do not show any emotions or feelings when asked. They can also get very angry with anyone if they're questioned about their behaviour. Most gamblers are compulsive liars they feel the need to lie to other people to prove that they're not addicted, this is known as denial.
I like the idea of exploring the mind of an addict this is why we want to find someone who used to be an excessive gambler so we can see from their perpective on why they gamble all the time. This would give the documentary more of a narrative rather than it being purely facts. If we were to find someone we could then potentially use their story for a reenactment. Another thing that we could potentially dive into is to get a pyschologist for them to explain signs of addiction and how it has become so easy to 'fall into the trap' as it were.
