Documentary - Finding a suitable Narrator

Finding a Suitable Narrator

For looking for a narrator we knew that we were going to be looking for someone suitable for the target audience we would be aiming at, which was 16-34. The last unit I went onto Mandy to find actors, however, in this unit we looked into the other website to source a narrator. We went onto StarNow and uploaded a suitable post advertising our documentary and within 48 hours we had roughly 20 applicants and more in the following weeks.

We narrowed our search down to just 7 applicants Andrew Hill, Jill Bearup, Alexander Prior, John Grayson, Alex Ayling, Kahmal Sealey. We decided to email these asking them to send over a video of them reading the intro from our script.

Unfortunately, not everyone replied to our email only, Andrew, Jill, and Alex wrote back with some video. However, I will not be putting the videos on this blog as they've made most of the videos private for our eyes only. We were quite amazed at how clearly they were able to read the script all three had very clear voices, which we thought all could be great for our project. Jill and Alex stood out the most in the clips as when we found out that Jill had her very own YouTube channel with around 20k subscribers. On the other hand, Alex, we felt as if we noticed him from somewhere, he won channel 4 'Hunted' back in 2018. This was great news for our documentary as we could have them promote our project to get more people aware about gambling.

With a number of skype calls to the rest of the group we finally came to the conclusion that we wanted Alex to be our narrator. The reason why we wanted Alex was because he was very clear with what he was saying and we believed with the right guidence we could get some good audio with him. Unfortunetly, with Jill we just thought her accent would've been difficult for some people to understand, whereas with Alex his slow voice was great for what we was looking for. Also he is quite young so hearing a younger voice would appeal more for our specific target audicne.
