Documentary - Evaluation

Image
Evaluation Research: For this unit, I don't think I could've asked for a better group! Sara, James and I worked our socks off this unit to try and make the best documentary possible, with the budget we had. However, this wouldn't have been the case if we didn't put the research in. We knew from day one what sort of research we needed to conduct in order to make it fit the target audience (16/34 year-olds) and also to make it relevant to the brief, which was to have it made like a BBC Three style and have it related to the online day and age. Firstly we wanted to split the research into sections for each of us to the research and bring to the group collectively what we found out. As I knew a lot about video games and the backlash from a lot of them including microtransactions I was left to research that. I found out a lot of interesting case-studies from when children would use their parent's cards to purchase in-game credits. We knew that this was going to be...

Documentary - Analysis of Chris Smith Documentary director

Image
Documentary filmmaker Chris Smith Who is he/What has he made? Chris Smith is an American director/producer and is best known for making very interesting and critically acclaimed documentaries. He's been around for a long time now with his first directorial debut being in 1996 with the American Job. However, his first documentary was made in 1999 and called American Movie, which he was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Other documentaries that he had directed are: Home Movie - 2001 The Yes Men - 2003 Collapse - 2009/II Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - 2017 Fryre - 2019 The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann - 2019 I've watched Jim & Andy, Fyre, and I began to watch The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann but I never finished it because I found the story to be really slow and I struggled to get into the story as I've heard it so many time. However, Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond is one of my favourite documentaries I've watc...

Documentary - BBC Three Documentary

Image
BBC Three Documentary As this unit is based around BBC Three documentaries I've decided to look at a short documentary that I found, which really hits home. I looked at the documentary 'My Brother Took His Own Life: A Soldier Fighting PTSD' The reason this one appealed to me the most is that a lot of my own family have either served or are still serving in the British Army. The short documentary tells us about the tragic passing of Kevin Williams as he had a tough battle with PTSD, which is somewhat blown over people heads because some people just don't comprehend what is going through their heads. The documentary starts off with footage from Kevin whilst he was on tour, but over the top, it has his voice describing his battle with PTSD he says that 'it was like I was supporting the bridge and all the suspension cables decided to just go off one by one straight after the other'. This was a powerful way of opening the documentary because it tells us straight...

Documentary - Recording the Narration

Image
Recording the Narration On the 15th of May, we booked out the audio recording suite at the studios to get the audio for the narration of our documentary. We managed to book the suite weeks in advance because we were getting Alex Ayling who won season 3 of Hunted (on channel 4). In the morning we showed the final cut of our edit to Helen and she said that our sequences needed something more, maybe some statistics over playing over the top. This meant that we needed to go through our script and re-write some parts so that when these sequences came along the audience won't get confused and it wouldn't ruin the pacing of the whole project. After we got all the re-writes complete we sat down and was waiting for Alex to arrive for 1:30pm, but it got to the time and he was over 30 minutes late so we were trying to contact him to see where he was. Turns out when Sara emailed him she accidentally told him that the recording days would be on the 22nd of May. This meant that we ...

Documentary - Shooting Diary

Image
Shooting Diary In the blog, I will be going through all the productions days that I helped on in our documentary 'When The Fun Stops'. 12th April 2019 The first shoot that we conducted was on the 12th of April, during this day we managed to film many different gambling related cut-aways. Whilst in the pre-production phase we tried looking everywhere to film in an authentic gambling location (like a casino or betting shop). However, when we did email one casino the owner got really funny with us and spoke to us like we were dirt on the bottom of his shoes. So instead we decided to make our own casino, this way we were able to get controlled shot with time put into them. Rather than having someone follow us around rushing us to get the shots and leave. We booked our lecture room and moved all of the chairs out so we had room to place the tungsten lights. Once we moved all of the chairs out we pulled out the table from the base room (with the help from Aodhan and Ethan). W...

Documentary - Online gambling research

Image
Online Gambling For my generation there has always been online gambling, but how did this happen? In this blog post, I shall be looking into online gambling and how it changed significantly over the years by making it so easily accessible for everyone to get ahold of. First Steps to Online Gambling: In 1994 a software company called Microgaming was established, who are responsible for the first online casino being made. This was known as The Gambling Club. However there are many companies still out there today that believe they were the first company to create the online casino, but Microgaming are still around today and they are known for being the best business out there Image from microgaming.co.uk Skip ahead to 1995 and another key company hops onto the bandwagon called CryptoLogic. This company specialised in using real money transactions over the internet. What they also did was making money transactions a fast process, which was deemed safe for online players. In ...
